From sunbathing in reality to screaming sessions (yeah, that’s right) in the park, the artificial intelligence industry really knows how to keep things interesting, adrenaline-packed, and even somewhat operatic…

Not-so-Fun-and-Games at GDC 2024

• GDC catered to nearly 30,000 video game professionals who landed in San Francisco like characters in a gloomy, stormy world of Fortnite (minus the storm part).
• GDC 2024 wasn’t just a simple gathering of programmers doing “The Floss”, it morphed into an outlet for frustrated professionals because, well, industry life appears to have more bugs than the first release of Cyberpunk 2077.
• As if the frustrations weren’t enough already, a group even resorted to group screaming sessions in a park (clearly taking ‘voice acting’ to a whole new level).
• The mood was so heavy that Maxi Molina, a game developer, described the vibe as “rancid.” Perhaps, someone dropped a silent but deadly “gamer’s gas”? We may never know.

And the Drama Award Goes To…

In the end, it seems that Mario’s relentless desire to save Princess Peach from Bowser’s clutches is less dramatic than the state of affairs in our beloved industry right now. But hey, high pressure usually makes diamonds, right? Or, at least, uncovers some secret easter eggs inside meetings like GDC. Nevertheless, stay tuned, game on, and maybe grab some popcorn for the next conference – you never know what might happen. Remember, when life gets tough, you don’t always have to smash your controller. Sometimes, a group scream session in the park does the trick too. End scene.
