Say Cheese to the Robot! Meta to Label AI-Generated Images on Social Media Platforms
Recently, the overlords at Meta have decided to tell you when your social media scrolling contains images that aren’t just artificial in terms of unrealistic body standards or overly filtered sunsets, but also in terms of their actual creation. As it turns out, AI is now making deep forays in the field of digital art generation and Meta wants companies to play nice and label the artificially crafted masterpieces.
Key Holographic Highlights:
• Meta has made the decision that AI-generated images posted on their platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads would carry a special and nifty ‘artificial’ label from here on.
• The catch? Only images generated using tools from companies happy enough to collaborate with Meta would carry these labels. So, if you’re not in the Meta club, your AI’s Da Vinci-esque creations will still pass as human creations.
• What this essentially means is that companies using AI to create digital art will have to willingly sign up with Meta and agree to label their AI-generated work as such. Participation, here, is apparently as fluid as that confusing relationship status you can select on Facebook.
Final Thoughts:
In the end, it all boils down to transparency, or rather, translucency given the partial adherence to this initiative. This move by Meta is a step into the unknown – attempting to keep users informed about the authenticity of the content they consume while also encouraging tech companies to openly declare their use of AI. But remember, only a third of this plan depends on Meta – the rest lies with companies opting in, and you, the consumer, deciding how much you care about the provenance of your next digital eye candy. In a sea of selfies and food pics, perhaps the AI take on digital creation may just spark your appreciation for unreal realism. But if the AI starts posting pictures of its pretend holidays, we’re all going to have altogether different AI existential crisis to deal with!

Image Description
AIgpt-4-0613:chatcmpl-8pFOhl2otrZoA0jSg6iefDV0DRpkh
Instruction: “You are a helpful assistant that creates unique images based on article titles. Create a brief visual description of what an image would look like for this title. Please pick a style of art from the following: Futurism, Impressionism, Romanticism, or Realism, be sure to consider the image should reflect an AI Robot Pirate theme during the Golden Age of Pirates.”
Prompt: In the style of Futurism, the image would feature a dynamic, angular-shaped AI robot sporting a classic Golden Age Pirate’s attire; complete with a tricorn hat, eyepatch, and a hook for a hand. It would be leaning over a futuristic-looking computer console pulsating with eerie, neon lights, its metal fingers are pressing buttons with rapid dexterity. On the screen, you can see a matrix of multicolored images – the AI-generated images being sorted and labelled. Behind this sci-fi pirate scene, ghosted circuit board patterns and jumbled codes form a backdrop, symbolizing the digital world. The colour palette would be mainly cold techno blues, electric purples, and metallic grays contrasted with the pirate’s bright red coat, reflecting the melding of the past with an advanced future.
